Kick-Start Your Martial Arts Journey with MSDMA

Makani Self-Defense Martial Arts (MSDMA) offers self-defense instruction and martial arts wellness through a style known as Kajukenbo. This mixed martial art is composed of Karate, Judo/Jiu Jitsu, Kenpo, and Chinese Boxing techniques. Each syllable in Kajukenbo (KA - JU - KEN - BO) is meant to represent these five arts and the five martial artists who helped develop the system. The word "makani" is a term that generally translates to "wind" in Hawaiian, and is a nod to the system's founding on the Hawaiian island of Oahu in the 1940s.

Students can expect to learn from a variety of topics including basic blocks and strikes, kicks, forms (palamas), defensive grab/punch/knife/club arts, falls and takedowns, staff (known as a Bo), multi-person attacks, sparring, grappling, Eskrima (Filipino weapons fighting), and Kajukenbo history/knowledge. Though this may seem like a lot, information is introduced bit by bit depending on the individual student's level, with additional topics such as multi-person attacks, grappling, and weapon handling (staff/Eskrima) taught to more intermediate students and those who are able to retain and perform all subsequent knowledge proficiently.

MSDMA aims to encourage personal growth and development in mind, body, and spirit, while fostering a positive learning environment for it's students. Each new belt represents a level of proficiency achieved, and with that an opportunity to grow wiser and obtain further knowledge. Even after achieving black belt, learning and improvement never stops. This goal-setting, lifelong learner mentality is just one trait we hope our students adopt into their own through our classes as it is applicable to nearly all aspects of life.

**PLEASE NOTE: These are considered skill-based, non-competitive, keep fit and recreational wellness classes with a foundation grounded in more traditional martial arts. Students will learn how mixed traditional martial arts techniques are melded into a modern self-defense system while gaining a rewarding workout set at a pace suitable for all levels!
